PENMAENMAWR, LLANFAIRFECHAN AND ABER.

PENMAENMAWR is a neat and elegant village, in the parish of Dwygyfylchi, in the county of Carnarvon, 237 miles N.W. from London, 18 miles N.E. from Carnarvon, 9.5 miles N.E. from Bangor, and 4.5 miles W. from Conway. It is enclosed between two mountains — Penmaenbach and Penmaenmawr - that look down on the sea, both of great height, and from the tops of which a marine view can be obtained of surpassing loveliness. The surrounding scenery is exceedingly romantic, while the climate is very exhilarating. In position it likewise possesses great advantages to all who seek rest and repose from the pursuit of business. The Right Hon. William E. Gladstone, M.P usually spends a month in autumn at this picturesque little village, has of late years acquired the distinction of being amongst the most favourite of Welsh watering places. In view of its rising importance, several improvements have been made, and elegant villas erected. About half a mile from here is situated the Fairy Glen and waterfall, so much frequented by the visitors to Llandudno, Penmaenmawr and Llanfairfechan. There is a large hotel conveniently situated near to the station. In the neighbourhood are to be found several Druidical stones, with other interesting remains great antiquity. A new road to Conway has been made which has supplied a great want to the inhabitants of both places. There are some charming country seats of the gentry in the neighbourhood, some of which abound in plantations, and several extensive quarries are worked here. There is a handsome parish church, with places of worship for independents, Calvinists, and Wesleyan Methodists, and there is a National School and a British school. A large and commodious hail has recently been erected for the purposes of concerts, meetings, &c. Llanfairfechan is a pleasant village and sea bathing place in the parish of its name, and union and County court district of Bangor. It is situated on the Conway and Bangor road, about 7 miles from the former, and 8 from the latter town, and is a station on the Chester end Holyhead railway. Within the lass few years many new and comfortable lodging houses have been built. The places of worship are Saint Mary’s parish church and Christ church, the latter of which is a neat stone building with a spire built at the expense of the late John Platt, Esq. M.P. for Oldham who for several years resided in this neighbourhood. There are also chapels for Baptists, Independents Calvinists and Wesleyan Methodists. There is a National school here.
Aber is a parish and small village 5 miles W. from Penmaenmawr, beautifully situated on the road leading to Bangor. About a mile above the village, in the midst of magnificent scenery, is a waterfall which is much visited by tourists during the summer season. The pariah church is modern edifice, in the Gothic style of architecture. A large slate manufactory is carried on here by Messrs. Roberts and Son, of Carnarvon. There is a National school in the village.
